Company 3 Senior Colorist Sofie Friis Borup was just honored with a Bronze Lion at this year’s Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. The award was in the Colour Correction/Grading category introduced to the fest just last year. The campaign, Whatsapp ‘New Year’s Eve’, was, in fact, the only awarded entry in the category this year!
The aesthetically beautiful and heart-tugging piece follows a young man and woman through a number of evocative locations quickly and economically revealing the formation of their relationship through flashbacks, and their present lives apart during New Years’ Eve celebrations. By the time they finally communicate via Whatsapp, we’ve been taken through a rollercoaster of emotion in just under four minutes. With so many jumps in time and place, the color served both to underscore the feelings being conveyed and also to orient the viewer so as to leave the imagery to tell this story without prosaic explanations. “I was very happy being able to help the director and the DP and everyone involved to help tell this special story,” Borup says.
The annual festival, which salutes creative excellence in all facets of advertising and film craft, are among the most prestigious awards in that space worldwide.
