Set in 1970s New York and inspired by true events, Smoke follows a detective and an arson investigator as they track down two serial arsonists. To establish the show’s distinct visual identity, Company 3 Senior Colorist Siggy Ferstl collaborated early on with cinematographer Sam McCurdy to design a show LUT that would guide the series’ filmic aesthetic from the outset.

In the final grade, Ferstl leaned into Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve 19.5’s Film Look Creator plugin and made extensive use of Resolve FX Grain to layer texture and depth into the imagery. His approach went far beyond mimicking vintage film stock — it was about enhancing story through stylized, emotionally resonant visuals. “It’s about creating a world,” he says. “I think we’ve gone beyond just using this kind of tool to make something look like it was shot on film. I see it as just another way you can affect the look to tell the story and give the images a unique soul.”

Smoke showcases Company 3’s commitment to creative collaboration and long-form storytelling. Read more about Ferstl’s process and the visual development of the series in the full PostPerspective feature.
