Stefan Sonnenfeld on Restoring Pan’s Labyrinth with Guillermo del Toro

Twenty years after its debut, Pan’s Labyrinth returned to theaters in a new 4K and 3D presentation. Company 3 CEO Stefan Sonnenfeld oversaw the color grade, working alongside our team at SDFX Studios who provided the 3D conversion that helped shape the film’s new immersive feel. For Sonnenfeld, the project was more than a restoration. It was an opportunity to revisit one of Guillermo del Toro’s most beloved films alongside a creative partner he has worked with for decades.

Del Toro and a team of trusted collaborators carefully refined the visuals providing new dimensionality to the film’s fantastical world. Sonnenfeld explained that the remaster provided an opportunity to address moments del Toro had long hoped to refine. “The benefit is in nuanced color and shaping, and Guillermo had a very good sense of the things that troubled him that he wanted to make better and the areas where he wanted to make sure we preserved everything.”

The goal was never to reinvent a classic, but to enhance it with tools that were not available at the time of its original release. Guided by years of creative trust, Sonnenfeld and del Toro carefully preserved the film’s soul while refining details once limited by technology. The result is a version of Pan’s Labyrinth that feels both familiar and newly realized, offering audiences greater depth, clarity, and immersion than ever before.
