As a technical innovator, Ferstl is continually developing new approaches to color grading as his ever-evolving toolset expands. He has transcended traditional limitations of the grading process on the high-profile Prime Video science fiction series The Boys. His contributions to color—and what would traditionally be considered VFX on the Netflix series Avatar: The Last Airbender have helped expand how the industry views the colorist’s role. He has also brought his distinct sensibilities to the look of Netflix’s highly rated spy thriller The Night Agent, collaborated with director Tim Burton to establish the look for the pilot of the streamer’s Wednesday, and graded the HBO Max series Peacemaker, from creator James Gunn and starring John Cena.
In the commercial arena, he has colored hundreds of visually exceptional spots for major international brands, including Nike, Mercedes-Benz, and Cadillac, among others.
Ferstl joined Company 3 Los Angeles in 2008 after establishing himself as a go-to colorist, first in his native Australia and later throughout Southeast Asia and London. His experience living and working across these three key regions—each with its own cultural approach to color—has given him a unique perspective on the wide range of artistic sensibilities, collaborative processes, and grading styles across global markets. Ferstl’s talents have been recognized by organizations including the AICE (Association of Independent Creative Editors), the Lumiere Awards—where he won Best Use of HDR in a Series for his work on Netflix’s Lost in Space; and the HPA (Hollywood Professional Alliance), which has honored him with multiple color grading awards and additional nominations.
