Jill Bogdanowicz on Creating the Look for Ballerina
August 14, 2025 Aug. 14, 2025Company 3 Senior Colorist Jill Bogdanowicz, from our Los Angeles studio, joined Televisual’s Making the Grade series to share behind-the-scenes insights on grading the action thriller From the World of John Wick: Ballerina. With three previous films in the franchise already under her belt, Bogdanowicz was tasked with creating a standalone look for this latest installment. The creative brief called for a distinct visual identity that was less saturated and made greater use of colder tones.
To achieve this, Bogdanowicz developed a custom LUT inspired by the unique aesthetic of cross-processed reversal film. This tool allowed her to subtly dial in the desired characteristics without compromising detail. She also detailed the extensive process of “winterizing” scenes filmed in the summer, combining lighting, VFX, and color grading to create the story’s stark, snowy environments. “They were looking for something that was overall a little less saturated and made more use of colder colours in the palette,” she explained.
