DP Brett Pawlak Discusses His Visual Approach and Working with Senior Colorist Tom Poole on Spider-Man: Brand New Day

In a recent interview with Panavision, Cinematographer Brett Pawlak highlighted his collaboration with Company 3 Senior Colorist Tom Poole in establishing the visual identity of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Inspired by classic Spider-Man comics, Pawlak wanted the film to balance rich, saturated reds and blues with deep, inky blacks, creating a look that felt both grounded and true to the character.

To achieve that vision, the pair worked closely throughout camera and costume testing to develop a custom show LUT. “Throughout camera testing, I worked closely with Tom Poole at Company 3 to develop a show LUT that ultimately had a contemporary look with a classic film print curve, taking particular care to protect the reds and blues of the Spidey suit,” Pawlak said. Refined through multiple rounds of testing, the LUT became a key part of the film’s visual language, with Pawlak noting that the lenses selected for production responded particularly well to the look they developed together.
