Shifting the Visual Language of ‘Euphoria’

In a recent feature for British Cinematographer, cinematographer Marcell Rév ASC HCA spoke about his recent collaboration with creator and director Sam Levinson on the third season of Euphoria. Rév talked about their shared creative goals and intentions for the look and narrative of the series, with color and format as impactful tools used to enhance the storytelling.

Even before shooting, it was important for Rév and Levinson to explore the scale, lensing, and framing choices they wanted to use to construct this next chapter. While the show had previously leaned into a manic, intimate high school aesthetic, Rév and Levinson realized that shifting to a wider 2.20:1 aspect ratio and shooting largely on 65mm film offered the grander, more classical cinematic perspective they desired to capture the characters’ lives outside of high school.

Rév also highlights Senior Colorist Tom Poole’s key role in refining the show’s look. Poole’s contributions helped ensure the final series maintained a consistent tone while allowing filmmakers room to experiment with different looks. Rév recalls, “Tom’s role was instrumental in finding the final look of the Verita stock, he was involved early while testing it. We developed a Look Up Table we used as guidance for the dailies. It’s a practice we usually do on longform projects with Tom.”
