Little Black Book has announced the winners of their annual Immortal Awards, and we are delighted to see that WhatsApp ‘New Year’s Eve’ has received a commendation. This marks yet another win for the campaign after receiving the Bronze Award for color at the Cannes Lions 2023.
The aesthetically beautiful and heart-tugging piece follows a young man and woman through a number of evocative locations, quickly and economically revealing the formation of their relationship through flashbacks and their present lives apart during New Year’s Eve celebrations. By the time they finally communicate via Whatsapp, we’ve been taken through a rollercoaster of emotion in under four minutes. With so many jumps in time and place, the color served to underscore the feelings being conveyed and orient the viewer to leave the imagery to tell this story without prosaic explanations. “I was very happy being able to help the director and the DP and everyone involved in helping tell this special story,” Borup says.
