From Celluloid to Screen: Coloring Wuthering Heights
February 23, 2026 Feb. 23, 2026Senior Colorist Matt Wallach has collaborated with Linus Sandgren, ASC, FSF, on several of the cinematographer’s features, including Emerald Fennell’s 2023 dark comedy Saltburn. The director and DP reunited for “Wuthering Heights,” starring Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie as Heathcliff and Cathy in a bold reinterpretation of Emily Brontë’s classic novel.

“It’s vibrant and stylized, and the costumes and production design bring out a feeling of the period,” Wallach notes. “But it’s also something more abstract. They’ve crafted a unique world of color and texture — it’s not your bread-and-butter gothic look.”

Sandgren prefers to shoot on film, and in the digital grade, Wallach focused on preserving the texture and character of celluloid so the final image retained the feel of a true film print. Some tones in the digital release reach a richness beyond what a traditional print could reproduce, but the guiding principle remained photochemical authenticity.

The look stems primarily from the costumes, production design, and Sandgren’s lighting. “It’s a fascinating film that takes a very non-traditional approach to the visuals,” Wallach adds. “It’s a joy to work with filmmakers like these.”
“Wuthering Heights” is now playing in theaters.
