Yoomin Lee on Grading the Mythic Darkness of Florence + the Machine
December 23, 2025 Dec. 23, 2025Gothic textures, ethereal power, and a plunge into velvety shadows. The visual world of Florence + the Machine demands a delicate balance that holds onto darkness without ever dulling the myth. In a recent LBB interview, Company 3 Senior Colorist Yoomin Lee discussed her long-term collaboration with director Autumn de Wilde, shaping the band’s visual identity for recent music videos like ‘Everybody Scream.’ Lee notes that the aesthetic must be “both delicate and powerful,” particularly when navigating the “grungy” registers of the band’s latest era. Lee approaches the grade as a complete visual system, ensuring that the color palette integrates seamlessly with the costumes and set design to reflect the overarching themes of the album.
Lee goes on to detail the grading process, explaining how she utilizes contrast and restraint to ensure the blacks remain “moody and not overly dark.” By exchanging ideas closely with de Wilde, she works to sharpen the existing visual choices while keeping the imagery coherent as it pushes into heavier, more textured territory. For Lee, the challenge often lies in the fast-paced nature of music video production, where limited timeframes require a disciplined yet highly artistic approach. She emphasized the importance of maintaining craftsmanship despite these constraints, noting that the collective dedication of the creative team allows her contribution to feel like it extends “to the entirety of the album, rather than just a single song.”
