Company 3’s Siggy Ferstl on Grading The Boys Final Season

Senior Colorist Siggy Ferstl has been part of The Boys’ visual evolution across all five seasons. In a recent interview with Blackmagic Design, he shares insights into the color grade and workflow behind the series, drawing on nearly a decade of work on the show.

For the final season, Ferstl leaned heavily on DaVinci Resolve Studio, particularly its Depth Map tool, which he says has become part of his “default node structure.” Since using it to its full potential on The Boys, Ferstl says he approaches color in “a more three-dimensional way,” applying it differently to foreground and background elements to create atmosphere and direct viewer focus. In one deserted hospital sequence, he used what he calls “depth-aware color,” combining a cool green background with warmer foreground skin tones, along with volumetric haze and halation effects.

Beyond Depth Map, Ferstl also relied on Magic Mask and custom OFX-based effects, describing modern color grading as “post FX, which straddles traditional color and VFX.” His workflow begins with an independent first pass before he collaborates with cinematographers, directors, producers, and VFX teams to refine each episode.

Reflecting on the evolution of both the show and DaVinci Resolve’s toolset, Ferstl emphasized that his goal remains to elevate “the filmmakers’ vision” and immerse viewers more deeply in the story.
