Jill Bogdanowicz on Creating Apex’s Color of Fear
June 5, 2026 Jun. 5, 2026Senior Colorist Jill Bogdanowicz recently spoke with postPerspective about her work on Netflix’s Apex, the intense thriller starring Charlize Theron as an intrepid outdoor adventurer locked in a life-or-death battle with a mysterious stranger, played by Taron Egerton. Directed by Baltasar Kormákur (Everest) and shot by frequent collaborator Lawrence Sher, ASC (Joker), the film transforms the Australian wilderness into a breathtaking yet perilous landscape, where towering cliffs and rushing rivers are as beautiful as they are threatening.
Discussing the film’s visual approach, Bogdanowicz explains, “It was about leaning into the color and the contrast of the locations. Some of the scenes are in bright sunlight, but a lot of the action is also in thick forest, with a lot of green and yellow and a lot of contrast. Then some scenes are at night or inside a dark cave. Baltasar likes to push the contrast a little in color, but he doesn’t want to boost the saturation much. He wants it to feel very grounded and real.”
