Elevating Storytelling Through Sound and Color on BBC’s Reunion
June 23, 2025 Jun. 23, 2025Jamie Selway, Company 3 London Senior Re-Recording Mixer, speaks with LBB on the groundbreaking sound mix on BBC’s drama Reunion, using inventive techniques to portray the deaf community with authenticity and depth.
Avoiding cliché sound tropes, Jamie and the team worked with Director, Luke Snellin, to achieve the desired effects using contact mics, subharmonic textures, and reversed de-noising tools to reflect how each character experiences sound especially those using cochlear implants. “We wanted to stay away from filmic conventions of just rolling off the sound and using high pitched tinnitus style sound design to portray hearing loss, so we started experimenting with techniques more tailored to the authentic feel Luke wanted to achieve,” said Jamie.
From subtle sound design to full-body vibrations, Reunion is a testament to how sound can drive emotional storytelling. Company 3 was also proud to support the project on the color grade, with Senior Colorist Gareth Spensley and Colorist Gareth Thomas delivering the final color, helping bring visual depth and tone to this powerful piece.
