Dave Hussey on the Look and Color of Hulu’s Amanda Knox Series

Based on the real-life case of Amanda Knox, The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox offers a unique perspective on the infamous 2007 murder conviction of the American exchange student in Italy. To reflect Knox’s initial innocent and optimistic outlook, Company 3 LA Senior Colorist Dave Hussey, alongside Company 3 Toronto Senior Colorist Dave Muscat and long-time collaborator, cinematographer Colin Watkinson, created a show LUT that brings warmth and vibrancy to early visuals.

In the final grade, Hussey embraced the DaVinci Resolve Filmbox plugin. The LUTs were inspired by French film Amélie (one of Knox’s favorite films), along with a Sony Venice 2, which emphasized warmth and saturation, prior to Knox’s imprisonment. Hussey stated, “We also experimented on different scenes using grain in different ways depending on the imagery, and we added some filtration glow through Resolve.” — a look that was far from just a retelling, but rather one that captures the complex perspective of Knox. “We laid a bit of grain over the whole show using Filmbox’s Grain & Texture, not so much to make things look like film, but to give it a different kind of a look,” says Hussey, referring to the colder point-of-view in the latter half of the series.
